Further Relaxation of Rules on Taiwan Entry for Chinese Wives of Foreign Professionals

On Nov. 29, 2004, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) approved a measure, proposed by the Ministry of the Interior, to expand the scope of persons who can serve as guarantors for entry into Taiwan by the mainland Chinese spouses of foreign professionals working on the island. Once the measure is approved by the Executive Yuan, the responsible persons of the companies which employ the foreign professionals, or the superiors of those professionals (including foreign-national responsible persons and superiors), will be allowed to guarantee their Chinese spouses.

¡@¡@Under Article 17 of the Rules for Entry into Taiwan by Persons from Mainland China, foreign professionals working in Taiwan are required to find a natural person in Taiwan to serve as guarantor for the entry into the island of their mainland Chinese spouses. Because the professionals are foreign nationals, this has sometimes been difficult.

¡@¡@At the same time, the MAC moved to abolish the requirement that Bureau of immigration units at airports and seaports of entry take under custody the mainland Chinese certification documents of such Chinese spouses when they enter the island.
