BD's air-cargo handling rises by 9pc this fiscal

The country's export and import volume through air-cargo has increased by around nine per cent this fiscal (2010-11) over that of the previous fiscal.

Airlines have handled around 149,210 tonnes of cargoes from and to Bangladesh this fiscal (until May 2011).

The Federation of Asia Pacific Aircargo Associations (FAPAA) 38th executive council meeting (ECM) preparatory committee convener Capt Md Saifur Rahman said these at a press conference on overview of the 38th ECM at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the city Tuesday.

"Around 25 foreign airlines are now involved in handling air-cargoes at Shahjalal International Airport. Of them 19 airlines are operating directly. Bangladesh has been elected as honorary auditor of the FAPAA for the first time in its 38th ECM," he said.

He said the meeting will strengthen relationship among the FAPAA member countries and expand trade horizon.

Delegates from 15 member countries of the FAPAA took part in the meeting that continued from June 26 to June 28.

The federation has already introduced e-air wage bill through signing a deal with the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The FAPAA Chairman Samson Pao, Vice-Chairman Paul Tsui, honorary secretary Willie Van Heusden, Treasurer Joseph Khoo, and Executive Director Brian Lovell along with BAFFA (Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association) were present in the press conference.
